The Grand River Is the Future of Grand Rapids
Inside the 85-Mile Greenway Project Transforming West Michigan’s Riverfront
Read Time: 90 seconds

Big things are happening along the Grand River—and if you love walkability, waterfront living, and forward-thinking city design, this one matters.

In this episode of Coffee with Steve & Margaux, we break down the Grand River Greenway Project, an ambitious vision connecting Lowell to the Lakeshore with an 85-mile continuous trail system. And yes—it has officially broken ground.

The first major downtown segment, known as the Leonard to Anne connection, will link Canal Park to Riverside Park, making it dramatically easier for residents and visitors to experience the riverfront. Right now, getting between these spaces isn’t exactly seamless. Soon? It will be.

Here’s what’s coming:

  • 🚴‍♂️ 23.5 miles of new trail
  • 🌿 255 acres of new public riverfront space
  • 🌉 Two new pedestrian bridges
  • 🚧 A 166-foot tunnel under seven lanes of traffic
  • 🌊 A half-mile of dam-free waterway

This is a $9 million investment in connectivity, health, recreation, and long-term property value. It’s not just a trail—it’s a lifestyle shift.

Paired with the Blueway Project (which is reshaping the riverbed itself), this transformation positions Grand Rapids as a national model for riverfront urban development. River North, Canal Park, and surrounding neighborhoods are becoming destinations—not just places you pass through.

Projects like this are why West Michigan continues to attract families, entrepreneurs, investors, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. It’s intentional growth. It’s access to nature. It’s community by design.

Want to see the future take shape? Follow along as we continue sharing updates on the Greenway and Blueway progress.

Because here in West Michigan, we plant good seeds—and sometimes they turn into 85 miles of trail.
