Some cities have events.

Grand Rapids has ArtPrize.

In this episode of Coffee with Steve & Margaux, Steve and Margaux sit down with Tyler Loftis, Executive Director of ArtPrize, for a behind-the-scenes look at what is coming for ArtPrize 2026 — and why this event continues to make West Michigan one of the most creative, welcoming, and surprising places to call home.

ArtPrize officially runs September 18 through October 3, 2026, with Preview Week happening September 12–17. That means Grand Rapids residents get a first look before the full event kicks off and downtown fills with artists, visitors, conversations, performances, and possibility.

And this year, Tyler is thinking bigger than a traditional visual arts event.

ArtPrize will include themed experiences around:

Dance
A ballet festival and live performances that bring movement into the city.

Music
A large-scale stringed instrument event and other musical activations.

Opera
A performance at Rosa Parks Circle, bringing fine arts into the heart of downtown.

Visual Arts
The signature ArtPrize experience: artists at every level sharing work across the city.

Family-Friendly Creativity
A children’s activation at the Downtown Market designed to invite the next generation into the arts.

Fashion
A major fashion event with a bold goal: to break a Guinness World Record for the largest attended fashion show.

What makes ArtPrize special is not only the art. It is the access.

First-time artists and established museum artists can show work in the same city, during the same event, in front of the same community. People who might never walk into a formal gallery suddenly find themselves talking to artists, voting on work, and seeing downtown Grand Rapids through a more creative lens.

Tyler describes his role as a kind of gardener — listening, learning, preserving the magic, and helping the event grow into its next season.

And maybe that is why ArtPrize feels so aligned with West Michigan.

It is creative, humble, ambitious, welcoming, and a little unexpected.

Tyler even makes the case that Grand Rapids could become the Florence of the United States — a place where art, architecture, public space, and community all come together.

That may sound bold.

But spend one ArtPrize season downtown, and you start to understand exactly what he means.
