Grand Rapids keeps changing, and one of the coolest transformations is happening right along the river.

This week on Coffee with Steve & Margaux, Steve takes us on a walk through the newly redeveloped Canal Park, a roughly $10 million project in the River North Business District just north of downtown.

And this is not simply a prettier park.

It has been designed to help people actually use the riverfront.

There’s a tiered, crescent-shaped amphitheater built from solid granite, an accessible dock for launching kayaks and canoes, wider 14-foot pathways, and dedicated areas for playing, exercising, relaxing, and gathering with friends.

Even the pathways are thoughtful, using crushed limestone with an epoxy additive that creates a softer, more flexible surface underfoot.

The project also preserved existing trees and restrooms while adding new landscaping, stonework, pavers, railings, and improved access throughout the park.

And behind it all are the people and businesses helping make West Michigan cool.

Owens Ames Kimball served as general contractor. Viridis Design Group led the park design. Kent Companies handled much of the concrete work, while Harder & Warner brought the landscaping, stone, and paver work to life.

Those details matter because great cities are built by people who care about how a place feels, functions, and connects.

For nearby residents at places like Boardwalk Condominiums, Canal Park has essentially become a new front yard.

For businesses like Linear Restaurant, it creates an even stronger connection to the riverfront.

And for everyone else?

It is another reason to get outside, walk the city, sit by the water, launch a kayak, or spend an afternoon exploring Grand Rapids.

That is what makes projects like Canal Park exciting.

They do not only change the view.

They change the way people experience the city.

And that makes West Michigan an even more extraordinary place to visit and call home.

Plant good seeds.
