Your First Impression of West Michigan Just Got a $300 Million Upgrade
Gerald R. Ford International Airport is changing the way visitors arrive in Grand Rapids, with major renovations, smarter travel features, and plenty of West Michigan personality.

For many visitors, West Michigan begins at Gerald R. Ford International Airport.

And lately, that first impression has gotten a serious upgrade.

This week on Coffee with Steve & Margaux, we’re taking you inside the transformation happening at GRR, where roughly $300 million in improvements have created a more modern, comfortable, and distinctly West Michigan travel experience.

The changes are substantial.

There’s an expanded terminal experience with additional gates, a new lounge, a dedicated consolidated rental car center, and even a high-tech baggage system that moves luggage using individual carriers instead of one continuous belt.

But what caught our attention most is how much thought has gone into the traveler experience.

You’ll find spaces designed for business travelers to plug in and work, a sensory room for passengers who need a calmer environment, purified water refill stations, and options like TSA PreCheck and CLEAR to help make getting through the airport easier.

And then there are the details that remind you where you landed.

Madcap Coffee. Founders. Zingerman’s. Local art, furniture, mosaics, murals, and sculpture.

Those touches matter.

Because the best airports don’t feel like they could be anywhere.

They give you a sense of the place you’re about to experience.

That’s what we love about what’s happening at GRR. The airport isn’t simply moving people in and out of Grand Rapids. It’s becoming another example of the people, places, businesses, artists, and ideas that make West Michigan cool.

If you’re flying in for a weekend, coming home after a trip, or thinking about making Grand Rapids your next place to live, the message starts before you ever leave the airport:

West Michigan is growing. It’s thoughtful. It’s connected. And it’s ready to welcome you.

Not a bad first impression.

Plant good seeds.
